Mỹ Sơn phòng, chống cháy rừng

Fire prevention at My Son jungle and surrounding areas.

Being surrounded by thousands of hectares of jungles, the sanctuary of My Son (located in Duy Phu commune, Duy Xuyen district) has always been put under potential unexpected fire. Therefore, for many years, fire prevention has become a necessary mission for the management board of My Son in the dry season.

Fire prevention team on their patrol

Ready and proactive

On May 18th, afternoon, a fire started at hamlet Co Lau, Duy Hoa commune, Duy Xuyen district, about 5 kilometers from My Son’s protective jungle. This might have become a risk of fire for My Son if the fire was not stopped.

The management board of My Son had immediately called their force from different departments to support Duy Hoa commune and District rangers to extinguish the fire.

About 70 staff had responded to the call and gathered at an arranged site, then deployed to the border areas. The team had discussed a method to stop the fire and agreed with the idea of creating a divider line.

Until 3:00 am, May 19th, the team had successfully created a divider line with a length of 1 kilometer and 3 meters wide (from slope Ba Xoan to channel Mon). After the line was archived, the whole team had moved forward to supporting the fire extinguishment at Duy Hoa areas.

The department has always been proactive and ready with fire protection situation, therefore, in any cases, we can call for support” Mr. Nguyen Cong Khiet, vice director of My Son management board affirmed.

He also said: “Most of our staff had attended the fire prevention and stuck to the rules “4 in place”. It means forming the teams from staff, voluntary, provision and ordnance. All the fires had been stopped effectively thanks to that strategy” said Mr. Khiet.

Effects of divider lines

The management board of My Son is managing 1,080 hectares of jungle which borders Son Vien commune (Nong Son district), Duy Phu, Duy Hoa, Duy Son (Duy Xuyen district). Therefore, jungle patrol and fire prevention missions have been seen as most significant to keep the risks at its lowest.

Annually, in March, the jungle patrol is established for daily patrolling to the fire danger areas to regulate and estimate the risks,...

According to Mr. Nguyen Duy, head office of the Security department of My Son, not only jungle protection but also developing native plants has been focused. Since 2016, thousands native plants have been planted to replace the miscellaneous flora system. They include 15 thousands ironwood and lumber, rosewood trees and more than 500 jackfruit, mango, plum trees in the core and along areas of the sanctuary.

“Jungle promotion should be along with protection which is to limit the dangers of setting fire. Therefore, for years, there has been no any serious fires at My Son” said Mr. Nguyen Duy.

The above success was achieved thanks to building an effective protection strategy such as shifting guards at sanctuary entrance gate and at other jungle path entrances, timely detect and prevent residents from hunting, setting traps, choak-coal burning, hive burning,...

However, the most effective strategy that the management board of My Son has followed was building a fire watch tower and creating a divider line. Since the last 5 year, the management board has built a fire guard tower at Banh My (bread) hill, daily arrange guards and observe to timely detect the fire to report to the authorities.

In particular, dozens of kilometers of divider lines were created at border areas and local resident paths. The making has promoted effects in controlling the fire in the night May 18th in Duy Hoa. Up to the present, My Son has completed the creation of 27 kilometer divider line which is wide from 10 to 30 meters to limit the fire from spreading in case of fire.
