STRENGTHENING THE PROTECTION OF NATIONAL TREASURES AT MỸ SƠN SANCTUARY

Currently, the Management Board of Mỹ Sơn Cultural Heritage is preserving, displaying, and promoting two national treasures: the Ekamukhalinga and the Mỹ Sơn A10 altar pedestal at Mỹ Sanctuary.

The Management Board has identified potential risks that could lead to encroachment and damage to these national treasures, including: direct physical impact on the treasures, chemical effects, theft, and natural disasters such as earthquakes and storms. The Management Board has implemented and is continuing to apply security and safety measures for these two national treasures.

The Ekamukhalinga treasure has been on display at the permanent exhibition room in the Mỹ Sơn Museum, located at the Mỹ Sơn Sanctuary, since November 22, 2013. The Ekamukhalinga (Linga with one face of the god Shiva) was recognized as a national treasure under Decision No. 53/QĐ-TTg dated January 14, 2015.

The artifact is displayed on a pedestal and enclosed in reinforced glass, with accompanying information boards and QR codes for visitors to access detailed information. It is displayed alongside other artifacts and models representing the space of Hindu temples at Mỹ Sơn. The artifact has been fully documented and digitally 3D scanned. Every day, hundreds of tourists visit the site. In addition to being displayed for visitors, the treasure is widely promoted through various domestic and international media channels.

The artifact is located in the permanent exhibition room of the Mỹ Sơn Museum, under constant supervision by security forces, professional staff, camera systems, and sensor systems, and is protected by reinforced glass. Cleaning is carried out carefully by professional staff to ensure temperature and light conditions, as well as fire prevention measures, to protect the artifact from physical and chemical impacts.

Security is strengthened from a distance, targeting visitors with suspicious behaviors or expressions right from the ticket checkpoint, located 2 km from the heritage site. Visitors are monitored throughout their visit to prevent harmful acts towards the national treasure and the heritage site.

Direct security measures are enhanced around the artifact, with 24/7 protection. Continuous surveillance is in place when visitors are present. Prompt actions are taken to prevent and stop any direct acts of vandalism towards the national treasure. Authorities are immediately informed for timely handling. The value and protection policies of national treasures are also promoted to the community.

In case of natural disaster risks such as earthquakes, if there is an early warning, urgent measures will be taken to lower the Ekamukhalinga worship statue, safely cover and protect it, and transport it out of the museum to avoid damage caused by potential building collapse that may affect the national treasure.

Similarly, regarding the national treasure at the Mỹ Sơn A10 altar pedestal, the A10 altar pedestal at Mỹ Sơn was reassembled and fully restored from 17 sandstone blocks in 2020. It was recognized as a national treasure under Decision No. 2198/QĐ-TTg, which recognized 23 national treasures in the 10th batch, in 2021. The artifact remains in its original location inside the A10 temple and is open for public visits, with information boards and QR codes about the artifact. Barriers are set up to prevent visitors from approaching too closely.

The artifact located inside A10 Temple is under constant surveillance by security forces, including camera systems and motion sensors to alert when visitors approach the artifact. It is also regularly monitored by professional staff to promptly prevent acts of vandalism that could harm the national treasure. Any incidents are promptly reported to authorities for timely handling. Measures are in place to prevent large trees from falling and damaging the artifact.

The values and policies for the protection of national treasures are promoted to the community. In case of natural disasters such as earthquakes, if there are early warnings, emergency measures will be implemented to lower the statues of Linga and Yoni and ensure their safe protection on-site.

It is necessary to further strengthen measures such as constructing suitable canopies to prevent the direct impact of sun and rain on the national treasure. The promotion of the values of national treasures to the public should continue, along with the enhancement of policies for the protection of national treasures.
