The My Son Sanctuary in Quang Nam Province is the most significant religious center of the Champa Kingdom, with structures dating back from the 4th to the 13th century. Due to its outstanding universal value, the My Son Sanctuary was recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site on December 4th, 1999. To this day, the site’s global value has been preserved in line with the UNESCO Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage of 1972, as well as relevant Vietnamese government regulations.
Since its recognition as a World Cultural Heritage site, the My Son Sanctuary has received timely support from The Central agencies, UNESCO, and international organizations. This support has facilitated urgent reinforcement, repositioning, and restoration of architectural structures at My Son. Notably, the cooperation project between the governments of Vietnam and India, focusing on the preservation and restoration of Tower Groups A, K, and H at My Son site from 2016 to 2022, yielded positive results. The restoration work on these towers has been highly praised by both domestic and international experts, as well as visitors.
The initiation of conservation efforts on Tower Complex F is a realization of the bilateral agreements and cooperation programs outlined in the Vietnam-India Joint Vision Statement on Peace, Prosperity, and People, signed by the Prime Ministers of India and Vietnam in 2020.
In previous years, during the restoration of Tower Groups K, H, and A, experts from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) prepared a Project Report on the Restoration and Conservation of Tower Group F at the My Son Cultural Heritage Site. This work was further intensified in 2023 and early 2024, when Indian experts conducted multiple site visits to survey and prepare project documentation. Notably, from November 2023 to January 2024, a team of experts returned to My Son site to collect essential data for the restoration and conservation plans for Tower Groups E, F, and A’ in the later years. During this period, the experts carried out tasks such as measuring, documenting, assessing the current condition, taking photographs, using flycams, 3D scanning, and employing various modern technological methods to gather scientific data to support the restoration and conservation efforts.
Tower Complex F at My Son Sanctuary is currently in a severely deteriorated condition. For example, Tower F1, dating back to the 8th to 9th centuries, has brick surfaces that have turned pale yellow and become crumbly, with signs of erosion in many areas. The corners of the tower have separated from the main structure, and the cohesion of the bricks is weak, making them prone to detachment with minimal impact. There are numerous long, deep cracks running diagonally from the inside out, and the surrounding walls are fractured and significantly misaligned. Therefore, it is urgently necessary to implement conservation measures in the future.
