Application of camera trap technology in monitoring and researching biodiversity at the My Son Landscape Protection Area

In the context where forest protection and biodiversity conservation are facing increasing challenges caused by climate change and human activities, the application of science and technology in forest resource management has become an inevitable trend. Recognizing this, the Management Board of the My Son Historical and Cultural Landscape Protection Area has always placed great emphasis on the transfer and adoption of technological advances in order to improve the effectiveness of natural resource management and monitoring. New technological solutions such as the Smart patrol management software, GPS positioning systems, monitoring support equipment, and especially camera trap technology have been actively researched and implemented by the unit.

The application of technology not only enhances on-site monitoring capacity but also provides valuable ecological data, supporting the analysis and assessment of flora and fauna in the area. This innovation demonstrates the Management Board’s strong commitment to building a modern forest management model based on scientific foundations, transparency, and sustainable development. In accordance with plan No. 13/KH-KBVCQ on establishing a camera trap system for biodiversity monitoring, from November 24 to November 29, 2025, the Management Board of the My Son Landscape Protection Area cooperated with the Management Board of Da Nang City Special-Use Forests to conduct a survey and install 30 camera trap devices across all forest sub-zones, covering a total area of 1,160.05 hectares.Throughout the implementation process, the working team carried out terrain surveys, identified natural movement routes of wildlife, and selected suitable camera locations to ensure accurate and effective data collection while minimizing impacts on animal habitats. The camera trap devices are equipped with infrared sensors, operate both day and night, and are capable of capturing clear images with high durability under the humid conditions of tropical forests.

My Son Forest - a valuable ecosystem with many rare species. The My Son Landscape Protection Area is not only a core zone of exceptional value within the My Son World Cultural Heritage Site but also home to a rich tropical forest ecosystem with many rare wildlife species. The area has recorded the presence of numerous species of high scientific and conservation value, including species listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book such as slow lorises and pangolins, some of which are classified as endangered and require priority protection. Dense vegetation, diverse terrain, and high forest cover create an ideal habitat for a wide range of mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects. However, this richness is also vulnerable to negative impacts such as illegal hunting and climate change. Therefore, the application of a camera trap system not only serves research purposes but also acts as a “watchful eye” to support forest rangers in detecting unusual changes, thereby enabling timely and effective response measures.
